Sophie Strauss

Sophie is a
singer and a songwriter (does that make her a singer-songwriter?) from Los Angeles who sometimes lives in New
York and also recently in Spain for a hot sec. She's been singing since she was
two years old and writing music since she was sixteen and put out a demo
EP I'm Sleeping If You Call when she was nineteen. She's now
twenty-one and recording her first studio album. Get to know
her closer!
What encouraged You to create/compose music?
I always
loved music ever since I was a little girl, especially singing. I separately
loved writing stories and poetry, and when I was 16 years old I finally put the
two things together and started writing songs.
Why have You chosen this musical style?
I didn’t
really choose a music style so much as wrote what came naturally. I grew up
listening to a lot of folk and American as those influences are definitely
there, but I like to try new things and styles all the time and see where it
pushes my music while still having it feel like mine.
Where do You seek inspiration for Your new creations?
Absolutely
everywhere! Usually I think of a phrase or two and write it down and then build
the song around that phrase. It could be about a relationship, a conversation,
a meal, a job, a joke, or anything. When I was still in school I would often be
really inspired by things that were in class.
Which one of Your concerts was the most memorable for You and why?
Well, it wasn’t
really my concert…but I went to a pub called The Royal Oak
while traveling in Edinburgh, Scotland which is anamazing historical folk music
pub, and everyone sits around taking turns playing music in this tiny room and
drinking. So I got to join in and play a couple songs by myself and then sing
along with what other people played and it was one of the most perfect
experiences of my life. A really drunk woman walked in and sat right in front
of me and was making up words to my song and shouting them in my face while I
sang. It was perfect.
If You were a Super Hero, what super power You'd have?
Oooh that’s
hard. I think I’d want to be able to fly. All the other powers like
mind-reading and invincibility and timetravel come with too much
responsibility.
If You weren’t the composer and singer, what profession You’d have chosen?
Either
something in fashion or in food.
What do You feel while singing, creating music?
Singing
makes me feel connected.
Maybe You’d like to try Yourself in the new musical style?
I’m
constantly trying out new musical styles for fun…if anything feels natural I
always like to incorporate it into my music!
Which song was fun to create? Which one caused the problems?
Quizin a Magazine
and In the Freezer were both so fun to write and came to gether really quickly.
Quiz I wrote sitting alone on top of my stairs and keeping a beat on my legs.
In the Freezer I wrote with Mo Reynolds who is an incredible guitarist and we
just sat and played and wrote and sang and this weird wonderful song came out!
We Were Cool was a hardone at first, it started off completely differently and
it took me about a month and six different versions of it to finally land on this one.
You’ve recorded song “Rewind” together with Wingtip. Can You tell us who
suggested the idea to record this song together and how it was to work in
pair?
Wingtip has
been a friend of mine for a few years and we’ve done a little bit of music
together before, so he just reached out and told me he had a song and asked if
I wanted to sing it and I said yes.
I like Your voice very much, it is exceptional . In my opinion it is
distinguished in the song “Quizin a Magazine”, You sing here a capella.
Actually Your songs are very calm and quiet, don’t You think about changing
Your style in future?
Thank you! I
try to write songs that are different from each other. Not all calm and quiet,
not all fast and loud.
Which of Your songs is the most close to You and why?
That’s a
tough question. On Yeah No Fine I’d say I’m closest to Quizin
a Magazine. I wrote it the most recently so it reflects my current self most
accurately. But I’ve written new songs since releasing the EP that I feel
closer to. That’ll probably always be the case in some sense…feeling closest to
the more recent songs.
What are Your plans for future (in music)?
My plans are
to play and play and play. I’m booking shows and working on videos and always
writing new stuff. My plan is to keep at it.
What are Your plans for the nearest future? Maybe You intend to visit
Lithuania?
I’d love to
visit Lithuania one day! Right now I’m focusing on playing shows around my
hometown of Los Angeles and the United States but international tours are
absolutely a dream of mine.
You are so popular, what’s the feeling of public recognition, crowds of
fans asking for selfies with You.
I can’t say
I’ve experienced it yet but I promise I’ll let you know as soon as I do!
What can You wish to our audience?
I want you guys to feel heard and seen!
